Hostel of the week: Kex Hostel, Reykjavík

If ever there was a time to disappear to Iceland, it’s NOW, guys. From May to August, the midnight sun soaks the land for up to 24 hours a day – so basically an endless summer for us vitamin-D-starved souls! If you’re after a hostel with style and personality, Kex is the one. Not only is it a former biscuit factory, it’s a hostel, bar, restaurant and jazz club all in one! You’re also in the centre of Reykjavik with a mind-boggling array of museums, nightclubs, shops and, of course, coffee houses surrounding you. Sweet.

The décor is cosy from the off, with found objects such as Bauhaus lamps, vintage maps and Amish church benches blended with the factory-chic interior. The facilities match Kex’s old-fashioned hipster ambience – head to the vault and you’ll find a third generation hostel barber, next door to an old school gym space. If you’re having a chill day, unleash your inner bibliophile and get lost in the hostel’s eccentric book collection in the library, or flick through a vintage National Geographic on a leather sofa. All complete with cookies and hot chocolate, of course 😉

Hungry? The BAXTUR breakfast buffet is THE place to be in the morning. Slather your freshly baked bread with an Icelandic jam or two, or help yourself to some special porridge + toppings. Brunch, lunch and dinner are all about the gastropub vibes. We recommend the stacked pancakes or the spicy “freedom” burger of Icelandic Ísbúi cheese, caramelized onion mayonnaise, vegetables and Sæmi¬chips. ljúffengur! And as for drinks…did you know that until 1989 beer was prohibited in Iceland? Neigh more! Kex has an impressive selection of frosty craft beers, wines and cocktails. Make sure you stick around for live music and KexJazz, a weekly jazz concert series every Tuesday at 8.30pm.

And there’s more. Meet Boddi at reception, the president of Kexland tours! Boddi is on hand to whisk you off the beaten path to whatever Icelandic adventure you fancy. Discover myths and legends, ride the Atlantic waves on the Black Beaches or hop aboard a retro bus and visit the Golden Circle WITH a retro lunchbox!

To rest your nomad soul, go for a spacious 4-6 bed dorm or upgrade to a double room for that extra extravagance – with your very own view of the Icelandic ocean mountains included!

So if you’re after an immersive hostel experience, in the words of Kex, “Follow the river and you will find the sea”! Our customers are very glad they did….

“I thought I might be too old to stay in a hostel but there were people from all walks of life and from all over the world. The life music nights were wonderful also. And the staff is super helpful. Will stay there again next time!”
“My favorite hostel in Iceland. Loved the bar in the lobby, food was delicious. Comfy, clean beds. Spacious rooms. Great bathroom/shower situation. Definitely recommend. Going back some day for sure.”
